Fonts not rendering properly in the output WMS map

by Technical Evangelist on ‎03-08-2018 05:18 AM (319 Views)

Symptoms

Fonts do not render properly on generated maps when JPEG or PNG output is used for WMS service.

Diagnosis

This was a shared issue between GeoMedia desktop and WebMap in the past. There was a change made in WebMap 2015 EP05 which has a corresponding change in the GM Desktop version 15.00.0000.10203 - a new Registry Key added:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Intergraph\Applications\Direct2DMode

With a default value set to 1. In some cases such as a VM or physical machine not having a high-end graphics card, when you open a geoworkspace with text labels, the text looked fuzzy or blurred.

This problem was resolved in version 2016, meaning that you do no longer need to tweak the registry as the rendering engine was fixed internally.

Solution

Nevertheless, in rare occassions, this could be still a case on newer versions. We attribute this though to a system configuration issue such as:

  • (minor) installation problem - libraries could get improperly unregistered when doing upgrade from earlier versions
  • registry settings were modified and not reset to default before upgrade to 2016
  • graphics card driver or VM settings
  • ...

For those cases you are still given a possibility to switch WebMap to older rendering mode by:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Intergraph\Applications\Direct2DMode = 0

What impacts (if any) are there when switching WebMap to the older rendereing mode?

Loss of anti-aliasing support on WMS?

Thanks,

Colin

From my test experiences, the text renderings had worse quality but the AA still worked fine.
