How to fix a corrupted WebGIS installation

My WebGIS installation got corrupted. How do I properly make a clean installation without need of OS reinstall?



Bad things happen. There are nearly unlimited combinations of computer hardware, OS and software versions, settings, specific project requirements and others that make truly impossible for the software to properly react to any possible situation. While reading this article you are probably the unfortunate one suffering a corrupted or misbehaving WebGIS products installation. It could have been just an installation of engineering patch that did not go well, or you have tried to upgrade from previous release version.


What you've probably done so far:

  • Re-run the Configuration Wizard which is mandatory to run after each Hexagon Geospatial product installation
  • Tried to repair the installation
  • Uninstalled the software, make some casual cleanup in filesystem and registry and installed the SW back.
  • All to no avail.

The real solution

You almost got it but there are many places that you should take care of when trying to do a clean installation. The list below will guide you through all the necessary steps that usually resolve corrupted installation which worked fine a day before. You might miss some of the user settings, e.g. user preferences, recent documents list opened in GeoMedia, and such. On the other hand, the service instances will remain untouched and should work fine again after the installation succeeds.


Follow these steps:

  1. Stop WWW, WebMap and all other related services (Quality Monitor, Capabilities, SDIProCacheFiller, etc.)
  2. Uninstall WebMap, Portal, SDI (preferably in same order as those were installed) and also GeoMedia.
  3. Double check IIS for residual applications, virtual folders and App Pools:
    • Keep only web service and Portal instances and the related App Pools
    • Manually remove supplemental services such as printing service
    • You might notice that some App pools could not be removed as there were still applications assigned. But there are no such applications!?
      => You need to cautiously clean up the C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\applicationHost.config

  4. Manually delete all residual folders and files, except service instances folder and WebMap Publisher Data/Projects folder. The folders are like:
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hexagon (!except! .\Services\Instances)
    • C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intergraph
    • C:\Program Files\GeoMedia [Professional]
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Intergraph
    • C:\Program Files (x86)\Hexagon
    • etc.
  5. Delete related registry entries, under:
    • HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Intergraph
      • !except! HKLM\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Intergraph\Geospatial Server\Instances
      • !except! HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Intergraph\GeoMedia WebMap Publisher\Services
    • HKCU\SOFTWARE\Intergraph
  6. Clean up all TEMP folders such as
    • C:\Windows\Temp
    • C:\Users\<SW_Administrator_User>\AppData\Local\Temp
  7. Clean up all Temporary ASP.NET Files
    • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v2.0.50727\
    • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework64\v4.0.30319\
    • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\
    • C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\
  8. (Optionally) run a system clean up tool which can ease the removal of temporary files and perform registry fixes.
  9. Check Services - if there is any remaining e.g. Geospatial Server Capabilities Service, delete it manually:
    • Use command SC DELETE "Geospatial Server Capabilities Service"
  10. Restart the system


Then, start the installations again:

  1. GeoMedia
    • run Configuration Wizard
  2. GeoMedia WebMap and/or other WebGIS products
    • run Configuration Wizard
  3. Open AdminConsole and check results, incl. running Configuration Test
