As a user of PostGIS warehouses, I want to be able to connection to them via PostgreSQL service names as an alternative to the host/port/db combination, so that I can decouple connections from actual server names or IP addresses and have a more stable connection name should the server name change in the future.

The following 2 environment variables specify the location of PostgreSQL service definition files (typically named pg_service.conf):

PGSYSCONFDIR and/or PGSERVICEFILE

As a general policy, we are trying to retain symmetry when possible between GeoMedia and Spatial Modeler in their support for Oracle, SQL Server, PostGIS and GeoPackage.  But in this case the technology base will not permit connection via service name from the Spatial Modeler environment so this is implemented only for GeoMedia.  - Hal
