Displaying point cloud data - HPC versus LAZ

by sbent on ‎08-10-2018 01:16 PM (357 Views)

Question

When opening point cloud data stored in a LAZ file into 2D View it takes a long time to display. If the same data is converted to HPC format it displays much faster. Why is there such a difference?

Answer

LAZ is a compressed format of LAS point cloud data and when displaying a LAZ file it takes more time to decompress and render the data.

The HPC (Hexagon Point Cloud) file format is significantly faster than existing point cloud storage formats, contains internal levels of detail (LOD) and due to its patented storage and rendering engine is able to be streamed in a client to server environment.
