Which version of GMSC do you use in this case?
I did quick testing with edit geometries workflow in GMSC 2016 SP 4 and 2018 Update 4 and could not replicate this behaviour to prove a bug.
In each case the background was filling the geometry as it was newly shaped.
If you have one of these versions now and issue persists might I suggest a support ticket and we can investigate this more closely.

It turned out that indeed a customized plugin was interfering.
We changed that and now it is working.
