How to use the New York dataset

This tutorial is splitted into four parts:

  1. Import of the dataset
  2. Which features are contained in the dataset
  3. Resources for the New York Dataset
  4. Using the dataset

 

1.) Import of the dataset

At first you have to download one version of the dataset. We are currently offering the dataset in SQLServer 2012 as well as SQLServer 2014. Both datasets are delivered as a *.bak file. So you have to restore the database on your SQLServer instance.

2.) Content of the New York database 

Name GeometryType Description
airports Point

Airports of the project area. Two display rules within the GMSC Admin to differ between "large" airports (e.g. JFK) and "small" airports.

boroughs Area

Boroughs of New York. Contains polygons for Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan.

boroughs_label Point

Contains centroid points for the above mentioned boroughs Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan. Based on these points the boroughs gets labeled.

buildings Area

All buildings which are stored in OSM and offered by Mapzen are contained in this table. Project area restricts the number of them.

census_blocks Area

Census Blocks for the Boroughs Queens, Brookly, Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan.

cities Point

Cities of the project area. There are four display rules within the GMSC Admin for the differentiation of the population for the year 2000:

  • pop < 10k
  • 10k < pop < 50k
  • 50k < pop < 100k
  • 100k < pop < 500k

crime Point

Contains citywide numbers of the seven major felonies between 2000-2014 per police precinct. Every year per police precinct is a unique row. So this table is suited for a piechart. There are six display rules so not every year is a unique feature.

crime_sum Point

Contains citywide numbers of the seven major felonies between 2000-2014 per police precinct. Every police precincts gets a sum and an average of the seven felonies. So this table is suited for a piechart.

crime_total Point

Contains citywide numbers of the seven major felonies between 2000-2014 per police precinct. Every police precinct gets the sum of the seven felonies. Every single year is a unique column so this table is suited for a barchart.

facilities Point

Information about all private and public community facilities in New York City. This table is suited for a ClusterPoint symbolizer. Therefore there are 13 different display rules within the feature class.

hurricane_evzone Area

Represents varying threat level of coastal flooding resulting from storm surge. To get a thematic map representation there is a display rule for every threat level.

hydrography_l Line

Contains all water lines within the project area.

hydrography_l_projectview Line Simplified geometries of the above mentioned water lines. Suited for the Overview window in GMSC.
hydrography_p Area

Combination of statewide water areas of TIGER and OSM data to get water areas outside of the states.

hydrography_p_projectview Area Simplified geometries of the above mentioned water areas. Suited for the Overview window in GMSC as well as for small scales 1:150000 and smaller.
landuse Area

Description for the primary use of land by humans. There is one display rule to extract cemeteries as well as churchyards from this table. The same table is used for cemeteries labeling.

natural Area

Selection of geological and lancover features. There is one display rule to extract forests from this table.

neighborhoodnames Point

Contains all neighborhood names for the five boroughs (Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island and Manhattan).

All New Jersey counties, which are within the project area are contained in this table.

parks Area 

Contains all park properties in New York City. There is a second feature, which is for labeling the parks. There are two display rules, which are scale-dependent.

population  Area 

Contains census information about every block within New York City. Table was extended to get a relative opactiy as well as the majority of inhabitants per census block.

 

potholes  Point 

All 311 service requests from 2010 to 2015-04-20 concerning potholes within New York City.

project_overview Area Simplified geometries of New Jersey and New York counties, which are within the project area for performance in the Overview window.
railways_l Line

Contains subway railways as well as overground railways. So there are two display rules for styling.

In this zip file you will find everything you need to set up the project in the GMSC Administrator.

 

  • PrintLayouts (Landscape + Portrait) A4 + Hexagon Logo + Power Portfolio image 
  • SVG's (you have to copy the folder to your GMSCWarehouseLocation/Symbology)
  • Symbology Library (New York.zip)
  • EPSG102318.csf
