The Study Area mechanism ensures that grid layers used together in grid commands share a common projection and data cell resolution.
Study Areas are also used when a grid layer is created by rasterizing a feature class. The Study Area defines the location and extent of the vector data being rasterized, as well as the projection, coordinate system, and cell resolution of the resulting grid layer.
