How to ensure special characters are displayed when importing ArcView Shapefiles

Symptoms

Special characters not displaying correctly after importing ArcView Shape files into GeoMedia Oracle database.

Diagnosis

Sometimes special characters like the German Umlaute (ä,ö,ü) or French special characters like é, è, à may not display in GeoMedia correctly.  One workflow which this has been observed is when importing ArcView Shape files into an Oracle database.

For example, in GeoMedia the ArcView Shape geometry has the name attribute  value as "Wasserwendi-Lischen-Käserstatt".  However, it should have the value "Wasserwendi-Lischen-Käserstatt" i.e. the character "ä" gets wrongly substituted by "ä".

In this case the machine Regional Language Setting is set to German(Switzerland).

Solution

One way to correct this problem is by creating an ArcView warehouse configuration file (*.ini) using the Define Warehouse Configuration File utiltiy.

Choose the "TEXT ENCODING"  keyword to successfully display any special characters with machine Regional Language Setting set to German(Switzerland).

Below is the value set for the "TEXT ENCODING" keyword in an ArcView warehouse configuration file (*.ini).

TEXT ENCODING: swissTLM3D_TLM_UEBRIGE_BAHN=UTF-8
