Moving Points Onto Linear Network


This article discusses the use of GeoMedia query analysis commands to move (pull or snap) points to the nearest linear feature.  GeoMedia queries update with changes in the source data set(s).

This workflow is written with the assumption that GeoMedia Transportation application is not available. If you are a Transportation user with a valid LRS network, then the workflow might be achieved using LRS Keys for Coordinate Events and Dynamic Segmentation only.


This example workflow will references data delivered with GeoMedia in MadisonCounty.mdb.  The following steps will be used:

  • Review Coordinate System of the linear feature class.
  • Build Functional Attributes on linear feature class to:
    • Create pseudo measures for the linear feature class.
  • Use Aggregation with the Accumulate Nearest option to:
    • Aggregate the nearest linear ID for each point
    • Calculate X and Y
  •  Use Dynamic Segmentation to create coordinate point events on the network

This workflow is written generically enough that it should work with most data sets.  You may find however that the workflow can vary slightly depending on your data.
