Question

The Principle Components Analysis (PCA) tools appear to be designed for Landsat data. How can ASTER data be used with these formulas?

Answer

Before performing Principle Components Analysis (PCA) please make sure that ASTER data’s statistics are calculated (Process > Calculate Statistics).

ERDAS ER Mapper 7.1 has two options for PCA:

  1. Tools > Remote Sensing > Create RGB Principal Component 123. This will create a RGB 123 image. If you want to create RGB 321, change the colors in the algorithm window.
  2. Open the ASTER Data in ERS format and go to the Formula Editor in the Algorithm window.
    1. Select the Red band in the Algorithm window. In the Formula Editor go to Principal Component > PC 1-24. In the formula delete bands starting after 24 until the last band in your input ASTER image. Apply Changes.
    2. Select the Green band in the Algorithm window. In the Formula Editor change PC_COV's last number to 2 and delete bands starting after 24 until the last band in your input ASTER image. Apply Changes.
    3. Select the Blue band in the Algorithm window. In the Formula Editor change PC_COV's last number to 3 and delete bands starting after 24 until the last band in your input ASTER image. Apply Changes. Save your dataset.
