ASTER Band Ratios

This model applies various geologic image processing band ratio formulae to a 14-band ASTER satellite image. The results are a single band image file. Once the formula is applied, there are several options for effective visualization of the results. You can use the Preview function to view results before saving to file.

Input Parameters:

Input ASTER Filename: (filename with path) of the input image. Model assumes this is a radiometrically corrected 14-band ASTER image.

Output ASTER Ratio Filename: (filename with path) of the output image created by the model. This can be left blank if model is run using Preview.

ASTER Ratio: (integer)(default 1) Value in the range 1 to 10 that specifies which formula to use.

Corresponding minerals and their formulas (bands):

        1. Ferric iron 2/1
        2. Ferrous iron (5/3) + (1/2)
        3. Laterite 4/5
        4. Gossan 4/2
        5. Ferrous silicates 5/4
        6. Ferric oxides 4/3
        7. Carbonate (7+9) / 8
        8. Epidote (6+9) / (7+8)
        9. Amphibole-MgOH (6+9) /8
        10. Amphibole 6/8

Stretch Stats Skip Factor: (integer)(default 5) Value specifies the skip factor in pixels for an intermediate stats calculation. A larger skip factor will speed up processing.

Use SD Stretch: (integer)(default 1) Value of true or false. 0 false = use min/max stretch. 1 true = use standard deviation stretch. The results of the ‘ASTER Ratio’ calculation are rescaled to an 8-bit (0-255) range using intermediate stats. This rescale can be either a min/max stretch, or a mean +/- standard deviation stretch.

Number of SDs for Stretch: (float)(default 3.0) Specifies the number of standard deviations from the mean to use in the stretch to 8-bit. This value is used if ‘Use SD stretch’ = 1.

Color Table Number: (integer)(default 1) Specifies which color table to attach to the output image.

Example Data:

aster_14bands_subset.img – 14-band ASTER image with radiometric corrections applied. Radiometric correction was performed by importing the raw data using the ASTER EOS HDF Format option in ERDAS IMAGINE (Manage Data tab --> Import Data). The individual bands of the resulting image were then resampled to a common pixel size (minimum pixel size was used in this case) and layerstacked into a single 14-band image. Only this type of ASTER data is appropriate for this model. The image is of a desert area in Nevada, USA.
