Creating mini-dumps for WebMap (or other) processes crash analysis

by Technical Evangelist on ‎02-17-2020 06:01 AM (37 Views)

On some occasions, you may be asked by a support analyst to provide crash mini-dump files for applications such as WebMap (e.g. MapSvr.exe). Such minidumps can contribute to reveal root error causes. The crash dump is generated by Windows Error Reporting service and a user can control e.g. the dump file location and dump type. For the most cases, the mini-dump file is enough.

The error reporting can be simply configured like this:

  1. Create registry key for the executable file that you'd like to track. Let's assume we want to collect crash dumps for MapSvr.exe process, se we crate a sub-key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\MapSvr.exe
  2. For this key, we'd like to set the location, dump type and maximum dump counts. The corresponding values are:
    • DumpCount (DWORD)
    • DumpFolder (Expandable String Value)
    • DumpType (DWORD)
The registry entry will look like this:
    MiniDumpReg.png
  3. Now wait, or try to reproduce the crash behavior and the dump file should get generated.
