Question

How to change the map window cursor in Geospatial Portal from a hand to a black filled arrow?

Answer

The mouse cursor when viewing a Geospatial portal is dynamic by default and will change to a hand when in the map window view.

The hand image is not always desirable and some administrators may want to change the cursor image. The following workflow outlines how to configure the portal instance so that the mouse cursor is a black filled arrow when in the map window. Please note that this modification causes the cursor to lose its dynamic status.

The following steps will change the map window cursor from a hand to a black filled arrow:

  • Adding css with !important will result in losing the dynamic cursor behaviors (e.g. changing to crosshair when in feature info mode)
  • Overwriting the cursor with javascript would result just to the first “dynamic” event

Alternatively, you can use this custom styling mechanism:

  • Create “style_overwrites” folder in your web application root folder at ~\inetpub\wwwroot
  • Uncomment this line in the portal web.config
         <add key="StyleOverwritesFolder" value="style_overwrites" />
  • Copy contents of the style_overwrites.zip attached to this article to the web application root folder
  • Clear ASP.NET cache, portal cache, browser cache
  • Launch the portal with modified CSS to observe the cursor change
